BAG HAG

i found this $25 denim bag at forever 21, and- simple (and questionably trashy) as it is- i couldnt put it down. i decided to trust my instincts and buy the thing, promising myself id do her up ril nice.

taking after alex wang, i covered the bottom in studs, making it fresh and less knock-off-y by using varied shapes and finishes (silver, gold, gunmetal and bronze) (i love mixing metallics- get on it).

then, i used a small collection of pins, both new and vintage, that i'd been saving up for just the right thing (i thought it was gonna be a jean jacket... maybe they'll find a new home there in the fall!) i also added an extra gold chain on the strap to incorporate the mixing of metallics again, for a more coherent look (and to assure it held on to at least a degree of its white trash fash).

LUCKY magazine with my girl @sequinspandex

one of my most favorite darling darlings, lauren edelstein, was in LA this past week with Lucky Magazine, and i was LUCKY (im genius) enough to assist on the some of the shoots along side her.

we did amy from karmin, who was really adorable, and makes super rad tunes.
ill post a link once those pics are up.

we also shot a menswear accessories piece in silver lake that turned out beautifully!
link to follow as well.

but the last and coolest shoot was the fall fashion editorial up in the hills of malibu. the location was so stunning (though terrifying to climb up there in a motor home.... some of us may or may not have yaked at the top), and the clothes were truly gorgeous. it made me wonder if i should buy one nice bag or pair of shoes instead of 8 crap ones?? nah.

the prop crew was INSANE and we had this giant orange horse, multi-color lucite cubes, and BLUE CHICKENS!! i couldnt get enough
.

also lauren and her boss, the cute-as-a-button brit, elle strauss, fashion editor of lucky, were accidental twinzies in their new old levis shorts. cute x 2. cuttitude. cute suit riot. k done.

earth to barbie!

as it turns out, barbie lives across the street (aisle) from my little pony in the colorful town of toys r us, so i had no choice but to scope her current fashions and lifestyle. what struck me most was that the poor girl is still under the impression that ken is into women? which- it is more clear than ever- he is NOT.
did they share a room in the barbie dream home or did they sleep separate? maybe they were just besties and lived together for funzies? even if she was sleeping in the same bed as him, it could be like that time that when i first moved to NYC and dave slept at my apt every weekend and dressed like a treasure troll for halloween and picked out the boys i should think were cute from 1.5 blocks away and i still was sure HE was straight.
luckily dave came out... apparently barbie wasnt so lucky and they tied the ole (bearded) knot.
he, too, wore white (and pink) on the big night.
sorry babe.

My Little Phone-y

after purchasing one too many cell phone cases in japan, i held off from bringing home THE ONE. it was pink and gooey and had a little tiny pony on it, and its the thing i most regret not buying in my whole life (besides a hot pink, one-shoulder bathing suit in hawaii back in '90 that had an attached faux grass skirt AND lei!!! can you imagine?  but my cousin was buying it and since the age of 5, apparently, i simply cant live with being a non-individual).

ANYway... i got home and knew i needed a pony phone to call my own. so, i went to toys r us and bought the only kind of My Little Pony they are making these days, though i sure miss the classic i got to know so well in my youth (way less slutty) (#kidsthesedays)

i used 2 ton epoxy to mount the pony to the case (make sure its hard plastic, anything bendy will crack the glue). then (using the same glue), i covered the rest of the base in an assortment of rhinestones, glittery hearts, and anything pink/purple/ aurora borealis that michaels had to offer (i feel totes lame going to michaels... in NYC id be all up in dat garment district where they have a much larger and more interesting selection, but i have yet to get to know the LA garment district as well. soon i promise). as most long-lasting, strong glues do not dry clear, i made sure to cover any exposed glue areas in iridescent glitter while wet.

obv the best part of this phone is that when you talk on it you hold it like an old school land line!! also she stands at attention on your table while you drink or dine, and sticks her little curious head out of your purse in transit. together we have almost as much fun as when i was 7 and i didnt question my imagination and need to bond with inanimate but severely pretty things.
one down side? shes kind of a ham and butts in to every pic.

worth it.

sorta secret birthday

i was in japan, on the second of five 18-23 hour shoot days, for my birthday. i didnt think anyone on the japan side knew, so i was of course not expecting anything!!

so... my fave member, naoki, walks in and hes like, "oh, shelby, i did not know today is birsday, i am so sorry i do not prepare something for you!" and i said, "oh, naoki, please dont worry!" at which point he unzipped his 24 karats track jacket to reveal this t shirt!!! (which i now sleep in any night im not at my bofriends. dont tell)

GOL-LY did i think it was the sweetest.

keiko, the seriously adorable wardrobe girl on the EXILE team, also brought me this cutie pie cake and they all sang.

it turned into a pretty memorable birthday after all :)
